Tjantingkoe Profile
As an archipelago nation sprawling from Sabang all the way to Merauke, Indonesia is richly blessed with cultures, languages, ethnicities and fine arts legacies such as Wastra. Wastra or traditional cloth has become a solid proof of Indonesia’s penchant for beauty and originality. Every cloth carries a unique meaning and philosophy of its own, yet all of them bear distinctive trait that is uniquely Indonesian, thus worthy of becoming iconic of Indonesia’s national identity. Established in 2012, Anita Winata as the owner and designer of Tjantingkoe has since dedicated to bringing the beauty of traditional cloth such as Batik into the modern fashion industry. Witness as each design, pattern and color exude subtle romanticism of the cultural heritage.
Tjantingkoe Philosophy
The name Tjantingkoe is derived from the word Cantingku (my Canting), purposely spelled the antiquated way. Canting is an instrument used by batik artisans to apply malam or wax onto a fabric to resist dye-coloring to produce a beautiful work of art. Canting consists of nyampung (a copper vessel used to contain the malam/wax liquid), cucuk (through which the malam/wax trickles out), and gagang (canting holder made out of bamboo). Copper is chosen as the malam/wax container due to its conductive quality whereas bamboo is used as a holder for the artist’s convenience. Tjantingkoe has a deep appreciation of traditional cloth especially Batik by turning it into a collection that accentuates the pattern. We believe in working closely with artisans to help sustain local community as part of a proactive contribution towards preserving Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
